Alys McAlpine

I am an interdisciplinary social scientist researching violence, health, and social change.

I am a Wellcome Trust Fellow and Senior Research Fellow in Computational Social Science at UCL’s Institute for Global Health working in collaboration with the Jill Dando Institute for Security and Crime Science.

I have a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with a concentration in non-profit and entrepreneurship business from Boston University, a Master of Science in Reproductive & Sexual Health Research from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM), and a Doctorate of Philosophy in Public Health and Policy also from LSHTM at the Gender Violence and Health Centre.

For my PhD, I conducted fieldwork in Thailand using participatory social network mapping and in-depth interviews to explore labour migration pathways from Myanmar into low wage work in Thailand. Part of my thesis included a mixed-methods agent-based model that simulated these evolving pathways and emerging social networks.

I have worked on violence research and prevention in India, Kenya, Nepal, Uganda, Nigeria, and the United Kingdom, including projects with a range of organisations, such as the International Rescue Committee, Alan Turing Institute, Freedom Fund, Elrha, and Plan International.
